A reduced copy of a medieval circular world map discovered in Portugal by Cardinal Stefano Borgia (1794), with an enlarged detail of Central Europe underneath.
The original was engraved on copper c.1450 in southern Germany, measures 63cm in diameter, and is orientated with north to the bottom of the map. It is now in the Vatican collection in Rome.
The Borgia map plate was printed in 1797, with only three impressions known from that printing: the British Museum; Biblioteca Marciana, Venice; and in a private collection, Edina, Minnesota.
