Above is a general view of the coast, showing Elmina Castle (Dutch), Cape Coast and Fort Royal (both English). Also shown are 'Negro Canoas carrying Slaves aboard at Manfrow'.
Below is a closer view of Elmina Castle (originally built by the Portuguese as Castelo de São Jorge da Mina) and Fort Coenraadsburg (built by the Dutch to protect Elmina.
Both views are based in part on the observations of Jean Barbot (1655-1712), a French Hugenot working as a commercial agent on slave ships working for the Compagnie du Sénégal.
