Plan of Gibraltar in 1738

BASIRE, James.

Plan of the Town and Fortifications of Gibraltar, exactly taken on the Spot in the Year 1738. For Mr. Tindal's Continuation of Mr. Rapin's History of England.
London: John and Paul Knapton, 1744-7. Coloured. 380 x 595mm.

Trimmed into plate at top.

A detailed plan of Gibraltar with a 40-point key, highlighting the defences.
1738 saw an increase in tension between Britain and Spain over trade in the Americas, which led to the outbreak of the 'War of Jenkins' Ear' the following year. It is possible this plan was drawn by the author of the 'Continuation', Nicolas Tindal (1687-1774): during the writing of the 13 volumes he was appointed Chaplain to the Fleet and posted to the Rock.
