A diagram illustrating the speed Earth, Venus and Mercury to circle the sun. Earth took the whole of 1710, Venus eight months and Mercury three. An allegorical vignette depicts the sun as a ball with a putta sitting astride it; Earth is a woman in a carriage with four putti, drawn by a team of six horses; Venus is in a shell-like chariot drawn by two swans; and Mercury uses his winged heels to run ahead.
