16th century map of Scandinavia
RUSCELLI, Girolamo.
Schonladia Nuova.
Venice, Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1561, First edition. 185 x 260mm.
Published in Ruscelli's 'La Geographi di Claudio Tolomeo', this map of Scandinavia is an amalgam of Ptolemaic and modern mapping: new cities are named, yet the outline of Denmark is Ptolemaic and Scotland retains its west-east slant. 'Thule' is larger than Ireland.
A feature of this first state is that no map has a platemark at top: two maps were engraved on the same plate and the resulting sheet halved.
GINSBURG: Scandinavia, 18.
