Cook's map of New Zealand, engraved by Bénard for the French edition of Hawkesworth's important work 'An Account of the Voyages... for Making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere', first published 1773.

The Dutchman Abel Tasman discovered New Zealand in 1642: however it was Cook's circumnavigation of the Islands in 1769 & 1770 that proved they were not part of the great southern continent.
