A classic 17th century Dutch map of Italy

BLAEU, Willem Janszoon.

Nova Italiae Delineatio.
Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu, c.1670, German edition. Fine original colour. 385 x 505mm.

A fine map of Italy, decorated with a title cartouche featuring Romulus & Remus being suckled by the wolf.
This map was engraved by Jodocus Hondius II c. 1620 but, after his early death in 1629, the plate was sold to the rival Blaeu family. Originally it had panelled borders of town views and costumes, but these were cut off the plate in 1631 so that the map would better fit the Blaeu atlas format.
This example comes from the scarce German edition of the 'Atlas Major'.

KOEMAN: 2:631: 'it is likely that such copies were assembled to order by German customers''.
