An example of the First Edition of Cook's important map of the Strait he discovered, engraved by John Ryland for Hawkesworth's important work 'An Account of the Voyages for making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere'.
Although New Zealand has been discovered by Abel Tasman in 1642, it was Cook who discovered that it was not part of the great 'Terra Australis' or Southern continent.
