An early 19th century map of Germany in fine colour

LAURIE & WHITTLE.

The Empire of Germany into its Circles.
London: Robert Laurie & James Whittle, 1801. Fine original colour. 215 x 265mm.

A map of Germany reduced, according to a note, 'with great exactness from the Tabula Geographica Imperii Germanici Published at Berlin'. It includes Holstein, SIlesia, Moravia, Austria and Switzerland, but not Prussia.
The map was engraved by Edward Jones (fl 1799-1818) and Benjamin Smith jnr (1775-1817) for an uncommon smaller-format atlas by Laurie and Whittle.
Smith was later executed for forging Margate Bank notes, despite claiming he had been forced to do so by French privateers who had captured him in 1810 and held him in prison for four years.

British Map Engravers p. 612-3.
