The first printed map to depict the entire coastline of Norway
SANSON, Guillaume.
Royaume de Norwege Subdivise en ses Principaux Gouvernements. Tiré de Divers Memoires.
Paris, 1690. Original colour, 570 x 430mm.
Original folds. Fine impression.
An important map of Norway, the first to show the entire coastline in one map, rather than showing the north in an inset. The country is divided into 'Gouvenments' rather than the bishoprics of earlier maps.
The map was first published by Pierre Mariette in 1668, although a proof exists dated 1667. This fifth state (of 8) has a badly-erased address in the title cartouche, and a new line 'Chez l'autheur aux Galleries du Louvre, 1690', the year the firm moved there.
GINSBURG: Norway 4.
