18th century map of Cornwall from the monumental 'Large English Atlas'

KITCHIN, Thomas.

A New Improved Map of Cornwall from the Best Surveys & Intelligences Divided into its Hundreds..
London: Carington Bowles, Robert Wilkinson, & Robert Sayer, 1780. Coloured. 530 x 700mm, with good margins.

A fine example of the map of Cornwall from the largest county atlas published up to that time, with maps engraved either by Kitchin or Emanuel Bowen. It is packed with information, with engraved lists and descriptions of the towns. An inset shows the Isles of Scilly.
The project was begun by John Tinney, who began issuing the maps separately in 1749. However, Tinney found the cost of producing such a large atlas was too large and, before the atlas was completed in 1760, he had to bring in partners, firstly, Thomas Bowles, John Bowles and Robert Sayer, then their successors, as this example. The last edition was issued by Bowles & Carver and Laurie & Whittle in 1794.
