An 18th century prospect of London from the south
COLE, Benjamin.
A Prospect of the City of London, from St George's Fields, in Surry. Engrav'd for the New Universal Magazine.
LOndon, c.1752. Coloured. 180 x 300mm.
Original binding folds.
A view of London from Southwark, centred on Christopher Wren's St Paul's Cathedral. The buildings on Old London Bridge are more symmetrical than the reality, so perhaps the view anticipated a major rebuilding project. Instead the 'London Bridge Act' four years later gave the Corporation of London the power to clear the houses, completed 1761.
