A double hemisphere world map with California as an island

MERIAN, Matthaus.

Typus Orbis Terrarum.
Frankfurt c.1641. Coloured. 175 x 255mm.

Small repair in bottom margin.

A finely coloured map of the world, showing the 'islands' of California and Korea, an indistinct Cape Horn and a Great Southern Continent. Under the map are representations of the Four Seasons, with a salamander for fire, eagle for air, flowers for earth and a pair of unrealistic dolphins for water. In the top corners are depictions of the sun with a human face and a crescent moon.
The map is from Merian's edition of Tommaso Garzoni's 'La piazza universale di tutte le professioni del mondo', a work first published in Venice in 1585. Usually the map has 'pag. 369' top right; here it is only just visible.

SHIRLEY: 365A, rated 'Uncommon'.
