One of the earliest obtainable printed maps to name the United States

KLOCKHOFF, Hendrik.

Carte Générale des Treize Etats-Unis Indépendants de L'Amérique Septentrionale Pour Servir au Spectateur Américain. 1784.
Amsterdam: heirs of E. van Harreveldt, 1784. 425 x 420mm, with wide margins.

An important map of the newly-created United States of America, engraved by Klockhoff for Joseph Mandrillon's 'Le spectateur américain'. It shows the Eastern Seaboard from the mouth of the Bay of Fundy south to Amelia Island in Florida and inland to the Appalacians and Lake Erie.
Published the year after the Treaty of Paris ended the Revolutionary War. it is one of the first maps to name the United States. The title cartouche features military trophies, the 'Stars and Stripes' on a shield surmounted by a Cap of Liberty. A 'Stars and Stripes' flag peeks out from the left side.
This is an example of the uncommon first plate: the later 1785 edition had a new plate, not signed by Klockhoff, with the peeking flag not recognisable as a 'Stars and Stripes'.
