An early representation of the United States

ROBERT DE VAUGONDY, Gilles.

Amérique Septentrionale dressée sur les Relations les plus Modernes des Voyageurs et Navigateurs, ou se remarquent Les Etats Unis. Publiée en 1750 et Corrigée en 1783.
Paris: Jean C;laude Dezauche, 1783-1793. Original outline colour. 495 x 630mm.

This large map of North America and the West Indies was originally published in 1750: however after the Treaty of Paris recognised the United States in 1783 the map was 'corrected' to that year, with the borders of the USA delineated. This subsequent (and final) sixth state of the map dates from 1793, when the execution of Louis XVI meant that it was expedient for Robert's official title 'Geographe Ordinaire du Roy' to be removed from the plate.
The inset map of the north-west has not been updated: it still shows the fictitious 'discoveries' of Juan de Fuca, despite Captain Cook's Third Voyage (1776-1780) proving their non-existence.

PEDLEY: No. 450, State 6.
