An early example of this classic 17th century map of Oxfordshire

SPEED, John.

London: John Sudbury and George Humble, 1614-16. Coloured. 390 x 530mm.

Repairs to centre fold.

One of the most famous old maps of Oxfordshire, engraved by Jodocus Hondius for Speed's county atlas 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain'. It is also one of the most decorative maps of the county, with two columns of college arms, a plan of the city of Oxford and a vignette of two scholars examining a globe. On the reverse is an English-text description of the county and a gazetteer.
This is an example of the uncommon second edition, which was begun in 1614 (two years after the first edition) but not completed until 1616, presumably delayed by the death of the original printer William Hall.
