An impressive 16th century two-sheet plan of Antwerp

Slight glue toning at join, a few small repairs to original folds.

A monumental map of Antwerp, presented as a bird's-eye view, drawn by Joris Hoefnagel and published in Volume V of the Braun & Hogenberg 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' atlas of town plans. The engraved Latin text lower left includes a tribute to Daniel Rogers (c.1538-91), a diplomat from the court of Elizabeth I, who wrote verses for the preface of Ortelius's 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' (published in Antwerp), and a 25-point key to the plan.
On the map the major buildings are shown in profile, with the defensive walls shown in detail, especially the Duke of Alba's star-shaped citadel upper left. Along the Schelde river are the quays that made the city so important.
