A famous 17th century map of Ulster

SPEED, John.

The Province of Ulster described.
London: Roger Rea & Son, 1665. Coloured. 380 x 505mm.

Old ink mss. on reverse.

An important map of Ulster, engraved by Jodocus Hondius as one of the four provinces of Ireland in John Speed's atlas, the 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine', first published 1611-12. It is decorated with cartouches for the title and scale, an inset of Enniskillen Castle and a vignette seamonster. On the verse is a description of Ulster and a gazetteer.
This example comes from the Roger Rea issue, which was beset with disaster: according to an advert for the 1676 Bassett & Chiswell edition, ''the greatest part of an Impression, then newly Printed, [was] destroyed by the late dreadful Fire, 1666". Surviving examples of any Rea map are thus rare.
