MAGIN. [Late 18th century chart of the Bay of Biscay]
An Accurate Chart of the Bay of Biscay, with the Soundings, taken in 1756 & 1757, by the French Frigate Anemone... London: Laurie & Whittle, 1794. Coloured, Two sheets conjoined, total 730 x 1020mm.
A detailed chart of the Bay of Biscay from Ushant to Cape Finisterre in north west Spain, published during the French Revolutionary Wars, when the British were attempting to blockade French ports. Less than a month after publication the Third Battle of Ushant (known more dramatically as the 'Glorious First of June') was fought as the Royal Navy attempted to stop a vital convoy of American grain reaching France. Although the British dominated the battle, capturing or destroying seven ships (a quarter of the French fleet) without loss, the grain reached France, allowing both sides to claim victory.
