Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.

Australia in 1839.
London, 1840. Original colour. Steel engraving, printed area 325 x 425mm.

Map of the continent of Australia in 1839, including Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). Whilst there is a great deal of detail along coastlines, the interiors are relatively unmapped, which reflects the lack of knowledge of the region.
The colony of South Australia, which was established in 1834, is the only colony showing a border. A table gives the continent's total population as only 141,000.
