One of the earliest maps to depict the Cape of Good Hope

A map of the environs of the Cape of Good Hope, orientated with north to the left, illustrating the visit of Joris van Spilbergen on route to the East Indies in 1601, fifty years before the Dutch East India Company founded Cape Town in 1652. Thus details are sparce: the only names are Table Mountain, Saldanha Bay and the Cape. The seas are filled with galleons and sea monsters. The map was engraved by Georg Keller (whose DK monogram is bottom right) for the account of Spilbergen's voyage as recorded in de Bry's 'Collectiones Indiae orientalis' (Petits Voyages).
