The scarce second state of the Lhuyd-Hondius map of Wales

A map of Wales engraved from a manuscript map drawn by the Welshman Humphrey Lhuyd (1527-68), an M.P. and personal physician to Lord Arundel. He tragically died at the age of 41, five years before his map was first published, by his friend Abraham Ortelius.
This version was engraved by Pieter van den Keere and first published in 1607, in the second Hondius edition of Mercator's atlas. This example is from the scarce second state: the title cartouche has been modernised and two galleons and a sea-monster removed from the sea. It appeared in only three editions begore being replaced with another plate, as well as new maps of north and south Wales.
