The Maori of Dusky Bay, New Zealand, from Cook's Voyages
HODGES, William.
Family in Dusky Bay, New Zeland.
London: Strahan & Cadell, 1777. 225 x 380mm.
An illustration to Captain Cook's 'A Voyage towards the South Pole' depicting a Maori family in Cascade Cove; a standing man and woman plus a woman squatting with a child on her back.
Their garb appears to consist of skin cloaks and skirts made of leaves and grass. The man is armed with a greenstone 'mere' and a 'taiha (the longer, carved wooden club), whilst the woman is armed with a long spear. Hodges sketched the same family several times during the expedition's stay.
