Illustration of the New Zealand Spruce Fir from Cook's Second Voyage
FORSTER, Johann Georg.
The Spruce Fir of New-Zealand.
London: Strahan and Cadell, 1777. 235 x 180mm.
An illustration of the Spruce Fir, Dacrydium cupressinum (Podocarpaceae), of New Zealand, after Johann Georg Forster, published in the official account of Cook's second voyage, 'A voyage towards the South Pole, and round the World'.
Forster (1754-94) was naturalist on the voyage but, because relations between Forster and Cook were so bad, Forster played no part in the compilation of the official account and his illustrations were used without credit.
