A large and detailed map of Ireland, engraved by Sutton Nichols for Richard Cox's 'Hibernia Anglicana: or, The History of Ireland', but also occasionally used by Lea in his reissues of the Saxton county atlas.
The map is decorated with ornate cartouches for the title and inset map of the British Isles.
Sir William Petty (1623-87) surveyed Ireland between 1652 and 1656, while serving as Physician-General in Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army during the Commonwealth. The 'Down Survey' was created to help re-allocate land confiscated from the Irish to reward the English occupying army. It is regarded as the first British suvey of a conquered nation.
