A magnificent map of Liguria in superb original colour

A fine example of the most decorative atlas map of the Republic of Genoa, introduced into the Ortelius 'Theatrum' by Vrients in 1608.
Less than half the plate is taken by land: the rest is filled with rich decorations, including a strapwork cartouche with the arms of Genoa (the gryphons and crown picked out with gold) , a wind rose, sea-monsters and galleons.
As this map only appears in the later editions of the Theatrum it is comparatively rare: Van den Broecke estimates that only about 925 were printed.
