17th century double hemisphere map of the world
DU VAL, Pierre.
Planisphere, ou Carte Generale du Monde.
Paris, 1668. Original colour. 335 x 590mm.
Slightly trimmed into lateral borders, restored with new margins.
A fine French double-hemisphere world map, engraved by Louis Cordier and first published in Du Val's 'Cartes de Géographie' in 1666. The upper corners and cusp are filled with a compass rose, wind rose and a diagram of the solar system; the lower corners have a globe and armillary sphere, with an armorial in the lower cusp. On the map California is an island, the Great Lakes are open-ended in the west and there is a hint at a North-West Passage; New Zealand is part of the Great Southern Continent; western Australia is an odd shape; and 'Jesso' fills the North Pacific.
