A late-17th century warship
CORONELLI, Vincenzo Maria.
Nave di Primo Rango.
Venice, c.1693. Coloured engraving. 395 x 510mm.
A little creasing at centre fold.
The profile of French first-rate warship (one capable of carrying at least 100 guns), shown under sail, gun ports open, with men in the rigging. It is likely that Coronelli depicted a French ship because he enjoyed the patronage of Louis XIV, the Sun King.
Down the sides are 36 ensigns of European states. Upper right, opposite the title cartouche is a key explaining the engraved colour code which allowed the colourist to paint the ensigns correctly.
